A leading engineering consultancy is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to lead and deliver complex mechanical design projects across the Energy and Industrial sectors throughout the EMEA region.

This role is primarily office-based with regular site and client interface, operating in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. You will play a key role in delivering technically excellent projects from early concept through to construction, commissioning, and handover, while supporting continued growth across energy markets.

Role Overview

As Senior Project Electrical Design Engineer, you will lead electrical design delivery on projects such as:
  • MV/LV distribution systems
  • Substations and grid infrastructure
  • Solar PV, wind, battery energy storage systems (BESS)
  • Industrial power and process-driven environments
You will be responsible for technical leadership, client engagement, and team mentoring, ensuring projects meet programme, quality, and compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage electrical design delivery for Energy and Industrial projects.
  • Develop primary and secondary electrical designs for MV/LV distribution networks.
  • Design substation systems including AIS and GIS configurations, protection & control schemes, and auxiliary systems.
  • Carry out power systems studies including:
    • Load flow
    • Short circuit calculations
    • Protection coordination
    • Grid connection studies
  • Support renewable energy integration including PV, wind, BESS and microgrid solutions.
  • Produce electrical schematics, SLDs, layouts, and detailed technical specifications.
  • Specify and select key equipment such as transformers, switchgear, HV/underground cables, and protection devices.
  • Develop and review earthing/grounding designs in line with standards and site conditions.
  • Prepare tender packages including drawings, reports, technical documentation, analysis, and recommendations.
  • Support construction and commissioning through site QA, installation checks, and technical issue resolution.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of electrical design standards.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support knowledge-sharing across the team.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders including clients, network operators, contractors, architects, and project teams.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Honours degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 10+ years’ experience delivering complex Energy/Power/Industrial electrical engineering projects.
  • Demonstrable experience in power infrastructure, substations, and/or renewable energy projects is essential.
  • Chartered Engineer status is advantageous but not required.
Technical Skills
  • Strong expertise in MV/LV distribution systems and substation design.
  • Proven experience in protection & control, grid connections, and power systems engineering.
  • Experience supporting renewable projects such as solar, wind, BESS and hybrid energy systems.
  • Strong understanding of HV/underground cable systems, transformer specification, and earthing/grounding design.
  • Working knowledge of standards such as ETCI, IEC, BS, IS, EN, and CIBSE (where relevant).
  • Proficiency with tools such as AutoCAD, Amtech, Dialux and Revit (power system analysis tools advantageous).
  • Strong documentation, report writing, and technical presentation ability.
