This role will suit a Mechanical Engineer with hands-on experience working in hazardous areas, who wants to help shape a growing ATEX offering in Ireland. ATEX compliance is a fast-developing area here, and the company has a strong pipeline of projects with Ireland’s national water utility and other clients that need this expertise.
This is a full project lifecycle role. You’ll review explosion protection documents and hazardous area classification drawings from specialist consultancies. Then you’ll build technical proposals, help win the work and deliver it through to installation and handover. The role starts mainly office-based to begin with, focused on proposals, design and planning, and becomes more site-based once installation begins. After the initial projects, you’ll go on to manage a portfolio of 10+ sites in the South-West region. Mentorship and support are on offer throughout.
Key Responsibilities: - Review explosion protection documents and hazardous area classification reports, covering gas Zones and dust Zones.
- Specify and select ATEX-rated mechanical equipment suited to each zone, including fans, ventilation, HVAC, pumps, dust extraction and process equipment.
- Prepare technical proposals and tender submissions for ATEX upgrade projects.
- Carry out site surveys of existing plant to define the scope of upgrades.
- Develop mechanical designs and specifications that comply with ATEX requirements and relevant standards.
- Once projects are awarded, manage delivery through procurement, installation, commissioning and handover.
- Liaise with clients, consultancies and suppliers on hazardous area requirements and equipment selection.
- Coordinate installation teams and subcontractors working in hazardous areas.
- Maintain ATEX documentation, equipment registers and compliance records.
- Take on management of a multi-site portfolio.
Requirements: - ATEX / hazardous area experience is essential, ideally from an oil and gas background.
- CompEx certification is highly desirable, for example Ex12, Ex14 or Ex16.
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (Level 7/8).
- 3–4 years’ experience preferred. Strong candidates with less experience will be considered.
- Strong understanding of gas and dust zone classification and the equipment requirements for each zone.
- Experience with water and wastewater, pharmaceutical or process plant environments is an advantage.
- Experience preparing technical proposals or tenders.
- Comfortable splitting time between office and site.
- Strong communication skills, with the confidence to liaise with clients and consultancies.
- Full Irish driving licence.
